Now you’re ready to install your memory module. With the #0 Phillips Screwdriver ($4.36, ), take out the four screws that are holding the cover of the memory slot. After you do this, it doesn’t hurt to push the power button couple times, either. Take out its battery (this allows you to touch the innards of your Powerbook without being shocked). You don’t want a dud RAM module, and you also don’t want your RAM failing at the worst possible time.įlip your PowerBook over and set it down on a desk. It’s pretty hard to manufacture RAM, and if you buy the cheapest module available, you’re setting yourself (and your Mac) up for disaster.

This is great, because if your new memory module fails for some reason, you still can turn on your Mac and use it.ĭo not, we repeat, do not buy the cheapest RAM you can find. Our 12" PowerBook (and almost all of Apple’s PowerPC-based portables) have memory soldered onto the mother board. We’re performing our upgrade on a 1 GHz 12" PowerBook G4. Since all PowerBook G4s are slightly different, you should check EveryMac’s PowerBook RAM Guide to determine what sort of RAM your PowerBook needs. So, the more RAM you have in your system, the faster it should be! That’s because the Mac won’t need to swap information, and that will make your system run better. Your system will slow down, because the hard drive is much, much slower than RAM (RAM is like 100,000 times faster than a hard drive). If that happens, you’re in for some serious waiting (not to mention hard drive-grinding noises). You’ll be able to run more applications simultaneously, and your Mac won’t slow down after you’ve had it on for extended periods of time.īut is RAM really important? Why do people need it? When your Mac uses all the available RAM, it starts to put the information that was supposed to be stored in the RAM directly onto your hard disk drive.
The more RAM you have installed in your Mac, the faster your Mac will run. Applications are usually loaded into your RAM, as are files you are working on. Your Mac uses RAM to store information that needs to be accessed quickly and easily. RAM is a little like your hard disk drive, only there are no moving parts, and RAM is faster - a lot faster. RAM, or “Random Access Memory,” is a type of data storage used by your computer. This inexpensive upgrade can be performed by anyone in a matter of minutes, and after you’re finished, your Mac will run like new! Installing RAM into your PowerBook G4 is the easiest way to breathe new life into your aging portable.

You should be able to complete the whole transaction within a week.Īt the same time they are installing your CPU upgrade, they can upgrade the hard drive, optical drive, and memory. Within 48 hours, they send it back to you. They upgrade it, then put it through a 21 point test. If you don't have the original box to ship it to them, they will send you a box. But Daystar has made this upgrade as easy as pie. Other than adding memory or AirPort card, the iMac G4 Flat Panel is NOT user serviceable. It was especially apparent with Core Image "aware" apps like iMaginator and Motion that the GeForceFX 5200 Ultra was no match for the Radeon 9600, X600, and X600 XT of the G5 iMacs. The only possible downside of upgrading your iMac G4 "Flat Panel" CPU is inability to upgrade the graphics processor. This upgrade deserves serious consideration if you have an iMac G4 Flat Panel. It certainly runs quieter and cooler than the iMac G5s when flogged.

(We don't have full results on the iMac G5/1.9 "iSight" - it went into convulsions - kernel panics - halfway through our testing - we'll try again next week.)
On CPU intensive tasks, it is nipping at the heels of the iMac G5. You'll see even bigger gains if you have a 1GHz processor in your iMac G4 Flat Panel. We saw 39 to 100% gains in speed with productivity apps when comparing the original 1.25GHz processor to the 1.92GHz upgrade. The Daystar upgrade gives the "Manapua"* iMac G4 Flat Panel a new lease on life.
